COVID-19 Lockdown, Day 23

Today was a little better. I had gotten nowhere with Instacart, so I had to waste another hour of my schedule reordering groceries with Jewel delivery. I will never use Instacart again. Maybe they are biting off more than they can chew with the pandemic, but they are useless now. There are other delivery/pick-up services. God bless America!

At least our governor has given us more good news. It appears that the curve has come and that the worst is likely behind us. We cannot see the sun yet, but at least the clouds are clearing. Sure, no one and nothing will ever be the same, but at least in a month, God willing, the children will be back in school, and social life will return.

I saw a very clever music video about staying safe in COVID-19, taking the tune for the Sound of Music's Do-Re-Mi. Listen for yourselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMBh-eo3tvE

I continue to think about the COVID-19 prepared church I visited in Schaumburg on Resurrection Sunday. They had every other pew taped off, only those who lived together sat together, and at Eucharist, the Vicar giving the hosts put on surgical gloves before touching anything, held the host at arm's length, and dropped it into our hands. The tray with the wine cups sat on a table while the pastor stood in the chancel and repeated the words of institution. No one touched, and no one was in danger. In fact, the closest person sitting next to me was about 12 feet away! This is a small congregation, so they could make it work. I do admire their moxy! It would make me happy if my congregation were comfortable enough to take such measures. We are a small congregation as well, and we have the space. Still, I understand why many are afraid to try what the Schaumburg congregation is doing. Alas, the majority of the congregants are reasonably above 60, so they are at greater risk of death if infected.

If last week has taught Americans anything, it is to fear COVID-19. And what are the 3 responses to fear? Fight, Flight, or Freeze. It seems that a great many of us have done number 2 and then number 3. I choose number 1--to act and prepare. Yes, I stay isolated most of the time, but I am not afraid to venture outdoors when I need to. I make sure I have a mask, that I wear thick, reusable latex gloves, which I sanitize every time I remove them, I keep from touching my face with unclean hands, and I wash my hands before I put on my gloves and after I take them off. I stay at least 6 feet away from other people, and I give a wide berth from those I think are sick. Finally, I don't enter people's houses anymore; not even my own mother's, and I never forget to pray. I will be fine, and I am living in hope, not fear.

"Death is a robber, but it can't steal me 'cause I've been called from the Man from Galilee. Lord, I've never been up and I'll never go down 'cause my soul is Heaven-bound."

--Signing off.
