COVID-19 Lockdown, Day 58
I had an interesting encounter at a McDonald's today. I went to the location at 86th and Harlem as it was only a few blocks from my temporary office. I knew that all locations in the vicinity had closed their dining rooms, so I just wanted to get something to go. The door, however, was locked even though the drive through was open. Since I had a smartphone, I installed their app and ordered my meal that way.
When I paid, I had a choice between curbside service and drive-through. Since I walked, I chose curbside service, and I selected the pickup spot. Within 3 minutes, a woman came out with my food, but she walked to the wrong location. Clad in the mandatory mask, I flagged her over.
"You're supposed to have a car!" the woman said.
"I walked over here, and your door was locked," I answered. "I chose curbside service."
"I'll give it to you this time, but not next time," the woman said, handing me my meal.
Hold on a cotton-picking minute! This woman behaved as if she were doing me a favor. Hello! I am a customer! There are a dozen restaurants in the area that are begging me to order food to go. I am doing YOU a favor. Now, say thank you!
Also, if I pay online using the app, and she sees I don't have a car, is she actually going to refund my money and discard perfectly good food? I certainly hope not!
I was on my lunch break and wanted to take a walk. Excuse me for not being lazy enough to waste money on gas or, heaven forbid, delivery. If you are not going to open your doors and barricade the dining area, the least you can bloody well do is allow curbside service for those who do not have cars. Besides, what if I could not afford a car or the extra $5-$10 for deliver? Am I supposed to go hungry?
This lockdown needs to end soon. It is driving everyone insane. What's next? A fine or jail for walking instead of driving?
--Signing off.
